Penguins

King Penguin

A King penguin on an unnamed island of the Aitcho group

Gentoo Penguins

A Gentoo penguin on the same island. Gentoo penguins were probably the most widely spread penguin species - seeming to cover every square metre of ground that was not snow or ice. What appears to be a treestump in this photo is, in fact a whale vertibra.

Macaroni Penguin.

We only saw one Macaroni. They are generally found further north.

Chinstrap Penguins.

The second most common species after the Gentoo.

Adelie Penguins.

We saw one colony of Adelie penguins, and that was dwindling in number, being replaced by Gentoos.

Species Unknown

On closer inspection, this turned out not to be a real penguin.
